Slow Playing in Poker

There are quite a number of tricks that can make a player a successful one. One of the best and the most effective is the slow playing. Slow play is the opposite of a bluff. Instead of betting with nothing, showing strength when you are actually very weak you check and call with a very strong hand to show the weakness where there is strength. There is always a question that players ask themselves; when should you slow play or when should you not slow play?

Always do slow play when you have a monster

In any case, you have seen amateur playing poker on television. In most cases, the amateur makes a very small bet with a hand like 88 or TJ. When the flop arrives, 883, or something, they quickly move all in. This play is normally played by many so that they can get a lot of money. When you are sure that you have a hand that will win, then you can give your opponents a chance to draw near. When you make a large bet, this shows that you want to win the minimum with a great hand and great hands do not come about that easily. Even if at that time your opponent has got a hand that is very strong and can call you, you will have managed to get some of their chips with a lot of ease by only making a small bet and allowing them to be at the top. If you are hard to bet, then you must slow play. When you have four aces on your cards, all you need to do is check. You opponents should not find out that you have them and if they do, you should give them free cards so that they create a chance of calling bets.

You should never slow play if your hand is weak. For example, when you have 8 7 and the flop comes A 8 7 with two hearts, then this is not good time to slow play. When you do this, a card or an ace that is the same as your opponent's kicker that is if he has an ace, will destroy your hand. You need to play the hand forcefully and make your opponents pay to draw against you.

Some players have the sense that a big all in overbet when you have got a monster will eventually be termed as a bluff, and they can get called for that. In this case, when your opponents suspect that you want to make a bluff, it will be quite hard for them to give you a call without a big hand or a big chip stack. You are more likely to get the money with a slow play. Always remember that a strong hand can also be helpless at times. If your hand is helpless, then you should not in any case opt for the slow play. Before slow playing, you should think about what will happen next. You should think if the move you made is a right one or a wrong one when you do that then you are likely to have a good ending in the game.
