Money Management in Online Poker
The popularity of online poker is on the rise every day. There are hundreds of online poker rooms who are waiting to deal you in. This is quite a profitable venture, but is equally hard to become a player who wins. Money management in online poker is also a tricky affair. In order to become successful with online poker, you must be good when it comes to bankroll management.
You need to know that money management is far more important in online poker that it is in live poker. This is because, live poker requires you to bring money with you to the game, how much you bring will determine which table you sit at from the start to the end this gives you the opportunity to decide how much to bring. Online poker on the other hand gives you the privilege of jumping from one table to another. Your online poker account is linked to your bank account or credit account; this ensures that you never "run out" of money. The only way you would run out of money is if you went completely broke, and this happens in poker. For this reason, it is important that you have the right skills to manage your money for online poker.
To be on the safe side, ensure that you have at least 500 times of the big bet in the game. However, this does not mean that since you have 500 times, you can't go broke; poker is a game of luck, you can be on a losing streak before your skills start working to your advantage. You need to expect only positive outcomes, if you go into a game thinking you cannot win; you are bound to go broke no matter how much money is in your bankroll. However, if you stay focused and manage to win at least a big bet each hour, the money you came in with will keep you in the game.
This is not to say that you take $3000 to join a $3 /$6 game, always ensure you risk only a little percentage of your bankroll, little means, at most 20% for every session. Never move up limits if you know you do not have a bankroll to back you up. Should you decide to, make sure that you are sure you win because of the poker skills you posses, not because of luck. Skills can help you win in higher limits, but luck cannot. Even as you move to upper limits, make sure you are ready for it, as it can be bad for your bankroll.
