It is through television that many people have been exposed to the fun of poker tournaments. This fun should not be limited to the television since you can choose to hold a poker tournament at your home. Home poker tournaments are relative easy to set up and are a great way for you to spend your evening. To set up home poker tournaments, you will need to know the following guidelines.

The first step is deciding on the Stakes

It is legal to hold a poker tournament in most states as long as there is not any form of profit being made from the game. This simply means that the host should not set up an entry fee. Knowing this should not stop you from asking people to bring a few snacks and drinks to the tournament. It is however good to be on the safe side by checking with the local law to ensure that you do not break any of their rules. Set an amount of money that everyone agrees on if you want to play for money. Remember you do not have to have a large prize pool to have a great poker tournament. You can also choose to play for glory or an agreed prize. To adjust the buy accordingly, you may want to hold two or three poker tournaments in a night. The person in first place of the tournament is traditionally awarded half of the prize pool. The person in the second place will then get about half of that in the first place, while the person in the third place usually gets their entry back. The prizes can however be adjusted to whatever each player is comfortable with.

All participants should decide on the Structure

You should figure out how many chips each player will be given at the beginning of the tournament. Know how big the blinds will be at the start, and how often they will increase. Try to give out at least 20 times the amount of the starting blinds in the chips, and you can often hand out more. Fewer chips to a blind doesn't allow creative play, while having too many chips can make the game appear too long. This idea should also be held for the other rounds. Home poker tournament rounds should be about 15 and 30 minutes long. A 5 minute hand will force people to go all in at every hand, while a two-hour round can be unending. Having fewer people in your tournament presents you with more chips and longer rounds. A good structure sample for a tournament with 30 people is having blinds starting at $25 to $50 and doubling them every 20 minutes, with starting chips of$5,000.

Always entertain the Bust Outs

A person who went all in with his aces on the first hand only to get them cracked will not be too happy if your tournament last for three hours. You should realize that if your tournament last longer many people will be left with nothing to do. That is why it is important to keep those waiting for the next tournament entertained. You can do this by setting up a consolation tournament, television, music or other games to keep them occupied.
