Why Become a Poker Pro Player?

why become a poker pro

So why should you want to become a poker pro player. Well this section of the website will outline the pros and cons of becoming a poker pro.

Pros of being a professional poker player:

It is a great game to play. Poker is a great game to play especially when you are winning money doing it. If you love the game as much as I do being able to play it professionally is a huge bonus.

Freedom. Playing poker gives you freedom to play when you want. No more working 9-5. You can determine your own hours and you are your own boss. Sure you might have some tournaments that you must play but the increased freedom is huge. Assuming you play sit and go or cash games you can basically play whenever you want, another benefit of the Internet, due to the different time zones games run online nearly 24 hours a day, 7 days a week. You can also travel and play poker in remote locations all you need is a laptop and an Internet connection.

Being your own boss. As mentioned above this has to be the biggest bonus. No more boss to work for. No more working for the man.

Cons of being a poker pro:

* Variance. Variance is a huge problem for poker players. Basically variance is having huge upswings or downswings due to the luck factor in poker. Poker is a skill game but the relatively small edges can mean that there are times when you keep losing as a 2:1 favorite and hence lose a lot of money. The ability to withstand these short term fluctuations is the main reason a lot of people cannot play it for a living. You need to have the mental ability to play the same way whether you are winning or losing.

* Isolation. Sitting at home and being on a computer by yourself all day can be depressing for some. For others it is not a big factor. But playing poker online for a living can require long hours in front of the computer by yourself with little or no human interaction.

* Peoples Negative Opinion of Gamblers. This is a big problem and one which cannot be removed. No matter how much you try to explain to people that it is a skill game people still think it is gambling. In fact the more you go on about how it is a skill game the more you make people think you are a chronic gambler trying to explain to them your guaranteed money making scheme. Playing as a pro will cause a lot of uncertainty and problems from your family and friends. Your best bet is try to explain to them how much you have won and provide accurate stats so they can see for themselves. In the end though you have to be happy with what you are doing and ignore public criticism as there will always be people who think that you are now a professional gambler.
