Trapping Your Opponents
Trapping an opponent in No Limit Texas Hold 'Em is a tricky job. You are deceiving an opponent to think you are weak when you are really strong. This is the opposite of bluffing.
Trapping an opponent can happen a number of ways and is a skill that is used by some of the best poker players in the world. Trapping allows a player to make a lot of money. It has great potential, but there is also a danger in trapping a player. Normally, a trap happens when you are slow playing a hand. In slow playing, you are trying to let your opponent catch up and get a hand, but in doing this you could let them get ahead of you. The one thing to remember in slow playing a hand is that you have to be able to get away from it. Since you didn't play it straight forward, text-book style, from the start of the hand, there is a big possibility of losing.
Trapping is more of a psychological skill than anything else. This is why it's important to learn player's tendencies and figure out their style of play. By figuring them out early, you can set a trap later.
There are different ways to trap. One of the more popular ways is for a person who immediately sits down at a table to bluff a few hands. They will show some bluffs and set up their opponents for later, who won't give them any credit for having a hand when they really do. This can have a big payout against weaker players because good players will figure out the ploy before they give away all of their money.
Another popular trap is just calling under the gun with a big pocket pair. You are concealing the strength of your hand and your opponents are less likely to put you on a big hand when your bet later. They won't give you enough credit and might even raise you. Little did they know of the surprise you have waiting for them.
Trapping allows you to make more money than you would have if you played the hand regularly, but playing every hand differently is important to poker. If you play every hand the same exact way, you are never going to make money because people will learn your techniques. Setting up traps every once in a while will put the people around you on edge and make them more away of your game. It's important to keep your opponents guessing. While poker is a game played with cards, there is so much psychology that goes into it.
If you are new to the game, try trapping opponents at least once a session. This could be checking when you flop a big hand or calling a raise with a medium pocket pair, hoping to hit a set. Anyway you can deceive the strength of your hand is key.
