Quick Guide to Counting Outs

After reading the initial How not to Suck piece touching on outs counting, you are no doubt aware of most general rules. All that remains is simply to sharpen up those skills till they are razor sharp.

At the moment you are counting outs, you have to make a wild guess first (hopefully it turns out accurate) about the specific cards your rival is playing.

The hand of your opponent's specifics will in a great way affect the total count of outs you might or might not have.

Example 1

Your hand:

Board:

What is the number of the outs you possess? Depending on whatever you have put your rival on; it's possible to have four outs or even ten.

The straight draw you have is simply to the nuts, (could be referred to as nutshots) and unless you happen to run into either a full house or the backdoor flush, you possess a total of four solid outs.

Incase you put your rival on any single pair, for instance , then what you have are ten outs (the nutshot and any queen or jack).

Unfortunately, it's almost impossible figuring out what your rival's kicker actually is with the 9 they have.  Incase what they hold is , then you are down to simply seven outs.

You have to take note of each situation, and then play your hand accordingly. If doubtful, it's always advisable to make an assumption that you posses the least count of outs, and not the most. Folding when you are good is always not a costly mistake than calling when you are behind.

Example 2

Your hand:

Board:

In this particular hand, all you do is span that gap from dead drawing through to 15 outs, but it depends on the cards your rival has. Incase they have quads or a full house, you are simply drawing or you are already dead (you can technically try catching running QQ or JJ for a much higher full house).

Incase your rival is in possession of a flush draw that is higher, you are then drawing to a total 6 outs, and what you have to do is dodge as well 7 hearts, along with any higher pair outs of 6.

Incase your rival had a single pair, you are then sitting with up-to 15 outs (with an assumption J or Q does not give your rival a sounder two pair).

For you to count the outs you have in this instance, all you need is on quality read on the rival. For any beginner out there, you need to strictly follow these two quality rules:

• Play for a draw only if its one to the nuts.
• On a paired board, never draw to any straight or flush.

There are instances when these poker rules can be ignored, but to a beginner, following them perhaps 100% is advisable. You could lose chunks of cash if you chase flushes on the paired boards, and winning that small pot is going to be your fate, and you might end up losing big pots by concentrating on flushes.

Generally, you should avoid situations like these, incase its possible to take the draw cheaply to the river, it's a decent hand still, but it's definitely not a hand in play the whole stack.

Example 3

Your Hand:

Board:

You have what is known as gutshot straight draw in this hand, and additionally, a flush draw. The question is, what count of outs do you primarily have? Let us take a glance at the gutshot. Irrespective of the board being rainbow (compared to all spades), you are simply drawing to a sucker end of a straight via a one card.

Incase 9 comes, you will have , while whoever has a king always has a more superior straight 9-K.

Incase there comes a spade, you are literally with the third nut, an 8-high flush.

In real sense, the out is the best you have regarding a straight flush, but even then, any has you already crushed. Your outs are literally zero, this hand is simply a must fold.
