No-Limit Texas Hold'em Tournament Strategy | Sit-and-Go Stages: Playing on Mid Blinds Level

Sit-and-Go Stages: Playing on Mid Blinds Level

You will notice that mid blind play will commence from the level of $50/$100 and will proceed until probably $100/$200. At this point, there have been a number of eliminations though not enough to be short handed.

Adjusting at the mid blind play

Once you notice that the mid blind play is going up, you need to make a few adjustments. You should forget any ideas you had on limping as it will prove to be pointless. This is when the average stack is a little above 20BBs; this means that if you limp for 5%, you are basically giving away money.

If you plan on entering a pot, make sure you are raising it, otherwise do not enter a pot. Your goal at this point of the game should be to supplement your stacks, with or without cards.

Early position playing

When you are playing in early position, there are a no adjustments to be made when in the mid blind. This is because you are still playing a tight game. The pots will still be contested for at flops and out of position play will be hard as you will mostly be playing for your stacks during flops.

This is why you should play hard on a strong hand as you make sure to fold the weak hands. It is never a good idea to try some poker creativity in early position.

Mid position playing

The tactics in mid position play remain the same as the ones in early position. You only require to offer protection to your chips when weak and raise when strong. There is no point in acting like a fanatic when in mid position play, but it is a good idea to widen your raising necessities as you move closer to the button.

Late position playing

Playing in late position is the most important thing for any poker player. This is where you have room to become creative. Your primary goal should be to steal as many blinds as possible. This is because you require to build your stacks whether you have bad or good hands. You should not sit around waiting for aces in a sit and go game.

In this game, the blinds go higher every time and playing monsters only will land you in serious problems. This is the best position to get creative. In late position, you need to change strategy as your goal is to get as many chips as possible.

Blinds Stealing

One of the known ways to get chips is by stealing blinds. This is not to say that you are at liberty to raise any two cards that come your way.  You need to know the type of hands that make good steal hands.

The best hands to steal blinds are the hands that can create something at the flop in the event you are called. You need to look at the hands you are likely to play when in early position in a really passive game of cash. This will give you a rough idea of the type of hands you can raise when in a late position. One such hand is a 7-8, it is simply perfect to use in a steal raise.

Your ideal, when raise stealing, is to be able to get the pot without struggling, but you should expect to be called some times. This is why flop value hands are important. This way, in case you are called, you can still play your hand at the flop as you would play any other hand.

In case you are called at flop, you need to asses your hand's strength as a whole before you decide on firing the 2nd barrel.

For example

You are on the button with $2,100 stacks. The small blind stacks are $1,800 and the big blind stacks are $2,000.

They are $50/$100 blinds. You get all folds to you at the button with a hand

You make a raise to $300 as the small blinds after the big blinds fold

You have the idea that the hands are simply trash hands

You ideally want to take the pot without any fight by making them fold

You have managed to make them fold so you get an extra $150.

Another example

The scenario is the same as above as all folds back to you and you have a hand

There is a flop of

There is a check from the big blinds as you place a bet of $400 and force the big blinds to fold

Here, you get called at pre flop but your c- bet allows you to get the pot.

It is important to be attentive to the way the table plays. If the players are making folds two and a half times the BB, or at least 1/3 the size of the pot, you need to simply bet the same. Remember that your goal is to win the pot without risking your chips.

3rd example

You are at the button with stacks of $1400, the small stacks blinds are $1800 and the big blinds stacks are $2000

The blinds are $75/$150 as all fold to the button (you) with a hand

You place an all-in bet for $1400 and the others fold

In this case, you only have $1400 chips and the blinds are at $74/$150 meaning that you only have fewer than 10BBs.

You followed the rule of thumb that requires shoving all-in, in case of less than 10BBs as opposed to making small raises.

Making small raises will mean that you are raising 30% of your total attacks. In case a player pushes you, folding will be impossible.

One of the basic poker theories is to make a bet if you intend on calling the bet. You should not play around with small raises. Put it all in.

Always keep your imagein check at the table when playing in mid position. You always need to know how the other players perceive you.

Players are bound to change their play around you due to your constant raises. There are some that will try restealing from you as they see the number of times you raise.

It is okay to be aggressive but keep tabs of your aggressiveness.
