Texas Hold'em Strategy for Beginners | How Not To Suck At Poker: Stop Bluffing

How Not To Suck At Poker: Stop Bluffing

Part 7 of 10 in the series for the poker player, this article surveys the larges leaks in every beginner's tournament: that is making many bad bluffs

Let us begin by explaining a misconception.

In poker, there is very little of the stone-cold bluffing. All thanks to the dramatic interpretation of the bluff by Hollywood. A lot of people tend to link poker with making big bluffs when an opportunity rises.

Just like the players seldom lose with quite a straight flush to a royal flush, the tournament does not go like that. Just like what you would anticipate for in a game like Texas Hold’em, bluffing appears with different forms. These are;

  • Semi-bluffs
  • Stone-cold bluffs which are also known as naked bluffs
  • Quick bluffs

The quick bluffs

The most common bluffs in Hold'em are the quick bluffs.

The quick bluffs are also referred to as small balls. They are the small bets that are prepared to win the small or the medium pots together with a high rate of winning. The risk is low, and the prize is a bit profitable.

For example, three players check on the button together with a flop of . No raises pre-flop occurred, and no player seem to be concerned about the pot. There are only two alternatives:

  1. Someone in the game has got a king and the same person is slowplaying
  2. Nobody has a king and all the players want to fold.

This situation is quite simple. Probably, nobody has got the king, and this means that they will fold.  The pot is also quite small to make a successful call. This happens to be a position bet, which is planned to end the pot, despite of your hand.

Semi-bluffs

Let us say for example you raise pre-flop with and you get two callers.

The flop appears ; this means that you have got a draw (which is flush draw). The first player will check, then the second player bets three-quarters of the pot.

In a condition like this, if you raise, it will be regarded as bluffing since you do not have anything. You are after any person who has got not more than the pair.

Because you have got the flush draw and overcards which happen to be the best, you have a lot of genuine ways to win the pot.

Your hand has got value, meaning that this is a semi-bluff. If your opponent folds, you can get the pot. However, if you get called, the probability is that you will make the nuts on any turn.

Normally, the hardest part of poker is the semi-bluffs. Always note that if you make a semi-bluff each moment you have a huge draw, you will get transparent as half of Britney Spears’ wardrobe.

Stone-cold Bluffs

The biggest stone-cold bluff to be captured on tape is the Brad Booth's bluff against the Phil Ivey during the third period of the high stakes poker

Booth: the Hollywood bluff, one of the most well-known poker players.

Brad drew all the time with a five or a runner-runner pair. Since his hand did not have value, here is an example of a stone-cold bluff.

In real sense, brad can only win the pot when Ivey folds.

These happen to be the forms of bluffs that are in Hollywood films, and most people think that poker is all about these bluffs. In real sense, making a bluff similar to this is not a good idea.

So as the bluffs can be beneficial, you have to know everything that is in the hand, as well as your challenger's plans. This is a high-level play kept aside for the best players.

You can build these bluffs, but if you are not a player with high-levels, you are just doing a whole lot of nothing.

These bluffs are illustrated by Dan Harrington as 'dark tunnel bluffs'. You do not know what happens until the last minute.

So as not to sucker in the game, you must not make stone-cold bluffs, and also make your semi-bluffs as little as possible.

The easiest way to make money for a person who has just started playing poker is by playing the straight -forward, the ABC poker that is if you have got the best hand. If you do not have the best hand, the simplest way is to fold.
